review 1: A fascinating read! Alice Albinia has a gift of powerful narration as she charters the course of the river upstream, taking the readers on a time travel, tracing the people, culture, geography, religion and society that flourished about the Indus. A first-person account, this book has nuggets of interesting information hitherto not quite well known. It is truly remarkable of the author to have braved harsh terrain and difficult conditions, travelling over 2000 km to document this interesting travelogue. It is really unfortunate that Indus which has been a cradle of a great civilization for over five millennia is fast disappearing, falling prey to indiscriminate exploitation of its resources and unplanned urbanization.
review 2: A wonderfully gifted writer. I
... more was amazed at the sheer depth of preception from Alice Albinia. Its true the narritave is about mainly about the indus itself but the book reveals so much more about the land, history, society, economy, its people customs and the intricate relationship which weaves this fabric together.[return][return]This is a very unbiased history of a comparatively small corner of the subcontinent from which its easy to extrapolate the essence of being in the sub continent.[return][return]As mentioned in the previous reviews it also takes a lot of grit and determination to travel to all the places which are so rugged and lawless within pakistan and further afield. However what is more surprising is how much she is able to extract out of the local people about the land and its history & customs. less
