review 1: I'm not always a fan of World War II books, so many of them feel the same to me, but this one was pleasantly surprising. I loved the alternative stance of the main character, showing him as a brave young man full with the spirit of resistance rather than just an object of pity. The style of the book with lots of illustrations and use of white space was interesting, but obviously made for a very quick read, so that it kind of felt more like a short story. In some ways I wish it would have been longer so that the reader could get a greater understanding for the characters and their backgrounds, but that was really the only downfall for me. Overall, really interesting read.
review 2: A powerful story of the experience of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto and the subsequen
... moret Uprising. The stark illusstrations make it feel picture book-esque and the sparse prose enhances the emotion of the text. A fictionalized character tells the account based on true stories and people who led the uprising. The text is written as a journal entry or reminicing of the main character's time living in the ghetto. The black and white book/pages, the use of pages with limited text, the selected full page illustrations all visually add depth to this story. A must-have addition to any collection of books on the Holocaust. less

Not quite as gripping as Maus, but terrifying and heartening read, equally.
