review 1: Having read Helter Skelter 20 years ago, I thought this book would be somewhat of a boring rehash. I was pleasantly surprised. This book tells the story of the Tate family that tirelessly fought against the California legal system to keep the Manson family members behind bars. I had no idea how many parole applications these butchers had applied for. I'm also very surprised and sickened by the amount of people who propose to be "born again Christians" in order to get out of prison....
review 2: I’ve read a lot of true crime books which tells you about the perpetrator and his/her life with some mention of the victims and how this crime has impacted them, but this book was different as it was all about victim, Sharon Tate’s family and their reactions. I
... moret was an interesting look back at the Manson murders told through the eyes of Tate’s family. The murder and the notoriety of the case took a huge toll on that family. Each member dealt with it differently. Sharon’s mother, Doris became a huge victim advocate fighting for the rights of those affected by tragedy. She was also instrumental in keeping the Manson clan behind bars at their subsequent parole hearings. Patti obviously felt slighted by her mother’s drive to help other victims and later put upon when asked to take over her work. I’m glad that she could be honest about her feelings rather than whitewashing them. Glancing at other reviews before I wrote this I was unaware of the controversy from another Tate family member surrounding this book. That may be worth looking into. I read and rate books based on what’s between the covers not what outside things are being said about it or what the movie was like. I’m also aware that when it comes to non-fiction everyone’s version of the events will be different with different viewpoints and embellishments. less
