review 1: Final Update:I'm calling it... Life is too short and there are too many good books to spend time reading something I don't love. I could not get into this at all. sigh...Original Status Update:Folks, this one is likely to stay on my currently reading status for quite some time. I picked it up the used bookstore in the young adult section and started reading after about 40 pages which is taking me the last month to get through I'm aggravated and frustrated. The synopsis makes the book sound interesting, however, I'm not getting sucked into this like I do with other young adult and sci fi stories. If you're looking at it as a potential read I'd hold off and pick something else up.
review 2: 3.5 stars. It's is an interesting idea, and I'm sure it was a challeng
... moree to figure out how to explain how the Darkborn 'see' (the author almost gets there). Outside of that, it's an interesting story. Political intrigue, betrayal, paranormal creatures, potential adultery, kidnapping, etc. this book has most of it. Add an emergent protagonist that discovers that she is incredibly powerful - possibly more so than any other character in the book, and you see that while it is an enjoyable (usually) way to while away an afternoon, it requires a great deal of suspension of disbelief. And that is going beyond the fantasy elements within it. Give me a protagonist that is relatable & I will love you for it. This one has aspects that are relatable - she is a mother who would seemingly do anything for her children - but she is do highly distracted from focusing on her missing child that at times I had forgotten that the child was missing. The big question - will I read the next installment? I'm not sure. I don't think I will go out of my way to find it, however I may pick it up if it comes across my path. less
