review 1: Although I liked the book at first, and certainly liked the premise and the setting, I became fed up with each of the characters in turn. Why did every one of them have to have such a bleak backstory? Parts of the story pleased me, such as the episodes where they were all having a meal together. And I liked the fact that the author had so many different examples of 'animal involvement', but by the end of the book I just wanted it to be over. She did not make me really care about these people. It could be that there were too many 'main' characters.
review 2: I can see why this book was chosen as the 'Nova Scotia Reads' book this year. Even though it takes place in Toronto it is relevant to everyone. The main character of 'Fauna' is named Edal. She is a conservat
... moreion officer whose job is to find illegally smuggled animals. She is on a long-term stress leave. She meets Guy who helps homeless people and animals. There are several other characters that we get to know well, both human and animal. The author successfully weaves the lives of the animals and the humans who live together in a big city. She shows us how even if we choose to ignore wildlife it is still very much a part of a our lives. We have encroached on their habitat and as they try to adjust to life in our backyards it is inevitable that there is conflict. Unfortunately it is often the animals who are hurt the most. The story is bittersweet, more sweet than bitter, and it gave me a better appreciation for the hidden wildlife in my own city. less

Wanted to give it 2.5. I actually could not finish it but did appreciate the writing.

This novel's twisting strands make for a slow but satisfying build.
