review 1: Lovely story, compelling characters, great epic-filled war romance story. This has ALL the makings of a good book. I listened to the audio book so it's possible I missed some nuances, but I felt like there weren't great explanations for why some things happened throughout the story. Weird transitions and such. Also, I think I heard at least one reference to 'World War I' and if I understand correctly, that term wasn't widely used until after World War II began. So there may have been some editorial errors. All in all a good read, especially if you like the time period (1914-1930s).
review 2: This is a wonderful novel set at Harvard University as WWI is breaking out. The story is one of young men being pulled into the war by their respective countries. I love
... mored the historical detail and how the world of young men being sent to war was set against Helen's mother's campaigning for birth control and women's rights. It is interesting that I have read a lot of books about the Japanese internment during WWII on the west coast - Farewell to Manzanar, The Hotel On the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, etc. I had never read anything about the treatment of those of German descent during WWI. I couldn't put it down - luckily it was a rainy Sunday. Being a native Bostonian, I really enjoyed the descriptions of my city -it felt so real . The end was heartbreaking, but I had an inkling that it would not be happy ending. I was moved to tears - three times . Just when I thought I had shed my last tear there is the reading of Wils' poem by Professor Copeland -it just broke my heart. I hope to see the plaque to the Harvard students who fought on the side of Germany on my next visit to Boston. With the 100th anniversary of WWI, this book should do very well. I will be recommending it to everyone. I hope to share it with my library book club as a selection next fall. less

A good period piece, good character development, kind of slow in parts, but overall, I liked it.
