review 1: This book offers a completely different interpretation of the battle. It debunks much popular American myth and accurately reports the limitations of both army and commanders; I was particularly impressed with the treatment of Lee. Perhaps the single most important contribution to historical understanding is that the author addresses why the men stood (or ran); this may seem prosaic but actually is at the heart of not only this battle but the four year war as well.

I love how the author builds towards that first clash between Heth's infantry division and Buford's cavalry. No author other than Shaara has painted a more memorable, familiar portrait of the countryside that would soon host that terrible clash of armies. I am only 3/4 of the way through the book, but already I cannot wait to re-read it. less
