review 1: I was pleasantly surprised by this historical romance. So many HR nowadays are silly or have incredible plots. This is a nice story that is reminiscent of the traditional regencies of the 90s/early 2000s. Set in the country, we have an easily impressed heroine, Roxana, who is engaged to a cad, George. Everyone, except Roxana, sees that he is shallow and doesn't care for Roxana. This was a touch tiresome but the hero of the romance, Alex Ayersley, makes up for the likeable ninny of a heroine. Alex has been in love with Roxana for years, but because of her engagement and his shyness, he has never held out any hope for her affection. When George jilts Roxana and Roxana turns to Alex for support he takes advantage of the situation and they are soon married. What follow... mores is the story of a couple who seem to be at cross purposes. As she begins to care for her husband, he can't believe that his beautiful, vivacious wife would truly prefer such a dull husband.I thoroughly enjoyed this one and look forward to reading others by this author.
review 2: I am a fan of pining hero stories and I like Alex. Roxana is 23 and very innocent and can be thoughtless. The story relies heavily on misinterpretation and the characters' inability to communicate properly. This is perfectly understandable but at the same time, I hoped for a bit more from both.The other obstacle in the story is the forced marriage immediately after Roxana was jilted. Many times it felt that she was still getting over her past relationship and that coupled with the misinterpretations and lack of communication makes for a frustrated and skeptical audience.Lastly, it's difficult to believe that she has fallen in love with Alex when everything happened so quickly and they barely got to know each other save for 2-3 occasions where they had meaningful conversations. I did like that the rest of the county seems to be rooting for them. less
