review 1: As a fellow perfumista, I enjoyed watching the author "fall down the rabbit hole" into the fascinating world of scent. This was a quick and enjoyable read that gives a lay of the land for those unfamiliar with the obsessive culture surrounding perfumes and those who love them. I only wish she had named more of the perfumes she described. I have identified almost all of them based on the notes, but there are a few that are driving me mad!
review 2: Picked this up thinking it was more of an exploration of the history of perfume with some personal anecdotes, but it was primarily a memoir, specifically of Alyssa Harad's descent into the world of perfume fans coinciding with her wedding preparations. I could identify with some of the 'secret hobby' feelings since... more I've been dipping my toe into the nail polish world, and the writing was well done. Not a book if you're looking for a treatise on perfume, but for a personal exploration (a dead tree edition of a blog at times), a good read. less
