review 1: I'd give it a 3.5. I liked the development of Jenny's character. I appreciated that we weren't just hit with the whole reincarnated Maria Romanov aspect right off. That probably would have put me off a little. Instead we are left to discover what is going on at the same pace as Jenny, with a little added at a time. I always enjoy tales with time travel and Romanov lore. I really liked that for once it wasn't Anastasia but her older sister Maria that was the one focused on. I am definitely hooked for the next installment. I want to know what will happen with Nikolai, with Ben, even Morgan and Tiffany. I thought it was a very strong start to a promising series. It kept me engaged throughout and wanting to get to know all the characters better. Of course it doesn't... more say it is a series, but it left way too much open at the end that I can only assume the story will continue.
review 2: This book started out with such potential - past lives, time travel, a mysterious gentleman! And then it bombed. About a quarter of the way through the book, the plot becomes convoluted and overly complex. The majority of the book seemed like tedious dialogue explanation, where the characters explain to each other what's happening. The romance is laughable - dry and passionless. And the mysterious Russian gentleman? How am I to believe that even after four years, he has no trace of a Russian accent, no cadence, stumbles over no new weird words? Or that a man from the early 1900's would have no hangups about cellphones and cars and weird American culture? Yeah, right, I don't believe it! I can suspend belief for many things, but this plot had me repeating those words over and over. Yeah, right, I don't believe it. I skimmed the last 25 pages just to be done with it. less
