review 1: I don't know what it is about this series, but I love it. After I read "The Restorer," I couldn't think of anything else. So I picked up "The Abandoned" and it was just as good as "The Restorer." You don't even need to read the pre-quel first. In fact, I found it more interesting to read it after I read the first book because you find out a lot of things. The writing is just beautiful, it draws me in like a siren's song. I loved it, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
review 2: I enjoyed the Graveyard Queen series & part of the reason for my low score on this book is that I have judged it harshly in comparison to the rest of the series - this might be a little unfair. I felt that this novella tried to do too much in the short form. It raced quickly to re... moreveal large chunks of complicated family connections and motives that should have evolved slowly. However, it was an entertaining read & the author skillfully portrays the mood and the world her characters inhabit. The pace of development of the relationship between the main characters is credible but I did struggle with the 'bad guy'. He is a bit of a cliche & his motivations aren't really clear to me - is he just supposed to be randomly evil and sadistic? Why? I think this would have been a great full length book. less
