review 1: Book provided by NetgalleyKhara is the adopted daughter ,and bargaining chip, of Demeter and Hades. Half of the year Khara lives with Hades in the Underworld while Persephone goes above ground be with her mother Demeter, and the other half Khara lives with Demeter above ground while Persephone is returned to the Underworld. It is a harsh life but it is also Khara has ever known. At the start of the book Khara is being ripped from the Underworld by a Dark One (Soulless Fallen Angel) under Hades order. When she wakes up she is above ground in a place that she does not recognize. She is immediately found by a warrior who safe guards between paranormal's and humans. He mistakes her for a creature that he hunts but when he gets close enough to touch he discovers who Khara real... morely is. Khara is the only daughter of Ares, a child who should not have lived because Ares declared that he would never have another daughter. Khara is taken in by this warrior only to discover that he is her half brother and that he and the other sons of Ares are warriors who fight to safe guard humanity. Khara and her brothers must learn the secrets of how Khara came to survive and why she was sent to the Underworld. With the help of a Fallen Angel Khara may just discover who she really is and what her role in this world is, but there are many who have discovered what Khara is and they want her for themselves. While I really liked the concept of this book, I love everything with myths, legends, Gods & Goddesses, this book fell a little short for me. Khara was just so emotionless throughout most of the book that I felt it was hard to connect with her. The hint of a love interest throughout this book also didn't really connect with me. It went from disdain to being distraught that something could happen to him in the blink of an eye. I really enjoyed the secondary characters in this story and as I said I really liked the idea of this book so I will continue on in the series to see if I can connect with these characters because the potential is definitely there. This could potentially be a series where it just starts off slow to build the world up and then the next in the series will just explode with everything you could have wanted in the first book.
review 2: *Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for review*I hate not finishing a book after I start it. I really try to give a book a chance to get better even if I hate it from the very beginning. This was a DNF for me at 11% which seems ridiculous, but I really just could not read another page. The summary provided about the book was really intriguing and I really thought I would enjoy this one. I love paranormal/supernatural sci fi with some romance thrown in, but this was just too far out there for me. We're really thrown into the story with no background at all. Ok, so Khara is the adopted daughter of Hades (weird, right?), but then she is kidnapped by an unknown dark force and ends up in Detroit (even weirder), to find out that she is really the daughter of Ares the God of War and she has all of these half-brothers running around. This in itself was all just too much for me, but if you throw in the lack of personality of Khara and the odd dialogue that was going on, it just tipped it over the edge. less
