review 1: Looking at the other reviews for this book, I'm sad to say I'm joining the minority in my opinion of it. Topher is a student with more emotional baggage than you poke a stick at. His best friend Mo invites him to spend the summer at her place for free so that he can get a job and save up to return to college. Topher meets Jace who is and artist and they end up having a night of hot steamy sex on Topher's 21st birthday but Jace is only visiting the area so it's just a one night thing. Topher is attracted to Mo's (straight, happily married) father who is a lecturer and also there for the holidays, however, one thing leads to another and although both men know it's wrong, they embark on an affair. Things start to look up on the job front for Topher and he ends the affair ... moreand moves out. He ends up re-connecting with Jace and together, they work through some issues. There was nothing wrong with the writing or the subject matter, I just didn't connect with any of the characters. Both Topher and Jace have had such terrible upbringings and are definitely good for each other but somehow I just never got attached to them. I'm sorry to say that I struggled to finish the book.
review 2: This was a beautiful book. I've been enjoying the M/M genre lately and picked this book up on a recommendation from Amazon. It certainly has some hot scenes and a HEA but it is about so much more: love, loss, friendship, betrayal, hurt, healing, redemption, and most of all courage - the courage to own your past instead of letting it own you and to trust that maybe, just maybe, you deserve as good a future as anyone else.. Topher and Jace are delightful. All the characters are well developed and "real". Ultimately this book is about hope. It made me cry in all the right ways at the pain, at the joy and ultimately at the hope. less
