review 1: This book was the book of the month for Book Club. It was an okay book. The author was great in her writing to describe colors, feelings, smell, characters. I could see and smell and feel her writing. So she gets 3 stars for doing a great job in writing. But the story line was just a little to tidy for me. I predicted the outcome of the book very early and was left with no surprises. We read a book in book club just so recently that was so similar to this book that this one was just like eating that one last piece of pie when you are already so full of food. The other book was "The Light Between Oceans". I would pick that one before "Mothers and Other Liars" even if we hadn't of read it first.
review 2: A heart heavy story with a plight no mother would
... moreever want to have; a decision nobody could make easily; an ultimatum that no one should face. Nurture vs nature has never been put to words better. A family does not consist of its members but rather that the love within it, the love that binds. Love doesn't see gender, race or blood, it only seeks to fill a need, a crack or hole where and when needed. There are some troubles with the book, Ruby not seeing reports of a missing baby stolen etc... Not making a connection with Lark; that would be nationwide news. Also Chaz is a poor character, to have loved Ruby and Lark so much so easily only to toss them both aside makes no sense to me. He gives Lark his medal (showing how much he cares for her) yet so easily let's her go without so much as a glance back. Just move on with baby #2, and propose. You would think he'd be just as torn. I do understand his feelings about the adoption bc giving up a child would never be easy. This is for Ruby's absolution not his; but to not want to push to get Lark back is another ball game. He never once tries for another solution to both keep and bring back each kid. Also cheating just seems so out of character, he did love Ruby and seemed to come too easily. Also leaving and never returning, almost dying and having no change if heart, no understanding of what Ruby is really faced with. None of it makes much sense to me. He needs a rewrite. But I did thoroughly enjoy the book even with the few straggly strings. less
