review 1: From Two Reflective TeachersFollowing along the babysitting theme was Willie and Uncle Bill by Amy Schwartz. While I agree with an amazon customer review that Uncle Bill modeled and taught some sneaky behaviors to Willie, I really liked this book as a mentor text for the students who feel compelled to include many adventures in one story. This book has three separate stories and three distinct adventures so again, it could be a great resource for helping students to develop focus in their writing. Uncle Bill is also quite a character and offers some opportunities for young students to infer and predict, as well as analyze some questionable babysitting decisions! ;)
review 2: When Uncle Bill visits, adventure is never far behind! The doorbell rings three times.U... morencle Bill is here to watch Willie. The text hints that Willie may be a bit dramatic. He wears "checked pants and a big striped shirt." In the first, there is an unexpected haircut and a French hairdresser hero, Pierre. In the second, the pair sets out to make Icky Stew (which consists of chocolate, tuna salad, liverwurst and much more). But who will eat it? A walk through Brooklyn finds some willing customers. The last adventure includes a subway ride and an electric rock-'n'-roll performance. Each story ends with Willie's mother coming home, instinctively knowing something must have happened but never quite finding out. less
