My Review
I absolutely loved Heather Lyon’s Collectors’ Society series, so I was more than excited to read her Fate books! I have to say I’m a little disappointed. This book took me on such an emotional rollercoaster. Tt wasn’t the good kind of rollercoaster. I didn’t dislike this book by any means, I was just overly frustrated by the characters!
A Matter of Fate focuses on the perspective of Chloe, a Magical with the powers of a Creator. She can make and destroy most anything. Her power is very much so coveted, which puts her and all those she cares about at risk. Before she knows it there are forces after her that she has never heard of as her world becomes rocked to its core. To make matters worse, the boy she’s been visiting in her dreams all her life shows up with his twin in her high school. This boy happens to be the love of her life and she didn’t even know he existed until his appearance. Now her heart is torn as she finds herself equally drawn to not only him but his twin brother as all. Fate is cruel indeed.
Chloe’s emotions were all over the place throughout this entire book, I literally could not get my head around it. She was in love with Jonah, then she was in love Kellan and then Jonah and then Kellan. It was an endless frustrating cycle. I couldn’t understand why she was making the decisions she was making. It killed me inside to see her hurt each guy who clearly loved her so much. The book focused more on the insane love triangle than the plot with the magicals and the impending doom, which was surprising, but I should have expected as much based on the title!
I truly enjoyed the premise behind A Matter of Fate, it was highly unique and different from previous fantasy novels I’ve seen. The world that was created was intriguing and the powers that each person had were amazing to consider. However, I grew very impatient with the ongoing romantic struggle between the characters. The entire last 20% was spent over this insanely ridiculous conflict that could have been so easily resolved if it had not been dragged on so long. I literally rolled my eyes a few times. Don’t get me wrong, the content had me hooked throughout. I couldn’t put it down, but I just felt that the ending events were drawn out past the point of enjoyment. I’m glad that certain things were explained in the end to provide me with some closure at least.
I look forward to seeing what is in store for these characters in the following books. I would still recommend you read A Matter of Fate if you’re looking for an emotionally intense fantasy read.
