review 1: I enjoyed this novel and as a former little girl who loved to read it definitely speaks to me. I believe I'll find similar girls who will in enjoy in my school library as well. My one quibble was a mistake in the title of one of Madeleine L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series (which Anna got as a Christmas gift). The last book is Many Waters, not Still Waters and it jumped right out at me although it probably won't to my students. I like how Andrea Cheng pulls in sewing as well as reading and I did like this book.
review 2: I bought this book for my library because it was a special value book from Junior Library Guild (JLG's books are all great), because I really liked the cover, and because I'm trying to incorporate more multi-cultural books. This book follows
... moreAnna, an American-born Chinese fourth grader, who has recently been jilted by her best friend. She is a little embarrassed of her Mom, who is a nursing student with imperfect English skills. To make matters worse, she also cleans an elderly shut-in's apartment to help make ends meet. Anna tries to keep this information from her friends, thinking they will judge her. She also struggles with Chinese school on Saturday, because her understanding of the language isn't as good as the other kids. It's at Chinese school where she meets Camille, with whom she has a lot in common. She is a quiet girl who likes to sew and often feels that she doesn't fit in. She takes comfort in reading, hence the title of the book. When her former best friend, Laura, discovers that hanging with the popular crowd is not all it's cracked up to be, Anna is cautious about letting her back in. But when Laura's family goes through some domestic difficulties, it is Anna's Mom who steps in to help out, and their friendship becomes stronger. I took this book home for the summer because it was a new book that I hadn't read, and it hasn't been checked out much. I always feel that if I've personally read a book and can give a first-hand opinion, I am more able to encourage kids to read it. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I wish I had brought home it's sequel, "The Year of the Baby," in which Anna gets a new baby brother. I will be pushing this book with kids who are early chapter book readers. less

Not dramatic, but a nice book for 4th and 5th graders who have friend troubles or love to read!
