review 1: The paintings and artwork that were chosen for this book were great. All kid friendly, but not necessarily used in other art books for kids (I.e. The snail by Matisse, calders crinkly giraffe, the bird by Braque). That alone made this book great. But then the projects that were created to reinforce what was learned about the artwork were just as great! This is a book we will check out of the library often.
review 2: Susie Brooks has put together a fantastic combination of art history and creative projects that will appeal to crafty children as well as students of fine art. Each spread features a well-known work ranging from 17th-century Chinese dragon plates to Andy Warhol's pet portraits. Next to a full-page-sized image, basic information about the indiv... moreidual work of art as well as some elements of the style and the artist is presented in accessible text blocks. Hiding under this text, each page folds out to show a relatively simple project for kids using the technique explained. A "Getting Started" section offers insight and inspiration for featuring animals in art, as well as an illustrated supply list showing how to achieve different effects with various materials. Resources at the end include a glossary and index as well as a basic explanation of the color wheel and a list of necessary supplies for each individual project. While the instructions for some projects may be a little vague, all show accessible techniques for achieving effects similar to the featured work using basic supplies.
