review 1: Very quirky and entertaining...two of my favorite things! I actually read before Christmas, so went in to the holiday ready to impress at social gatherings. (Received as a Goodreads giveaway, so diligently trying to get my reviews done...New Year's Resolution!) I heartily agree with another reviewer that it had a "Monty Python" feel to it...another plus for me. The illustrations and especially the advertisements at the end were the icing on the cake! (Ahh, Beecham's pills...the solution for EVERYTHING!) Would highly recommend for the sardonic and inquisitive reader.
review 2: William Vinson takes on the role of historian-comedian as he climbs into the proverbial ring and does battle with Christmas (and all its permutations and predecessors). At turns info
... morermative, apologetic, and wry (and scathingly funny in a Monty-Python-esque way), Vinson does a solid job of educating us as to the strange origins of Christmas that either go back to Odin, or a 4th century Turkish Saint, or Heathen/ Germanic holidays or a drunken Dutch sailor. All-in-all, this a fun, funny, pithy and informative read. less
