review 1: This book was so difficult for me. On the one hand, when i was reading, sometimes I felt as though I was reading something so Holy, something straight from the Heavens. But on the very other hand, I felt as though I was reading something straight from hell. It was just a book that made you think & truly feel what the main character was going through. Don't misunderstand me, I don't mean feel FOR the character. He's not a very likable guy, but Marianne changes all that. She is one of my favorite literary characters, I believe. I read this book so long ago & I am just now writing a review of it, but it was a book that has stayed with me over time, & I need to re-read it. I highly recommend this book. Give it time, because if you have to like your main character, I'm telling ... moreyou now, you won't.
review 2: Ok. The prose is good...really good. This author definitely has writing talent. The story is wildly imaginative so he's got that too...maybe just a bit of discernment is needed there. It's just that aside from a few adult references, this could be Y/A fiction. It also should have ended well before it did. I found myself skimming whole sections of his hike through Dante's hell. And even though the provenance was stated (several times...OMG...I get it already), it still felt like plagiarism. The pace was unbalanced. This story slowed down like a train car that's come unhitched and left stranded. less
