review 1: As a fan of the series, I imagined I'd like this book. I thought it would remind me of my wife and I watching Homeland episodes back to back. I had even listened to Phantom Pain, the audiobook narrated by Damian Lewis and like it. Most reviews say great things about this book but... I quickly lost interest halfway through. Although I'm more than willing to suspend disbelief for a fictional book, having Carrie get into jazz as a freshman in university when the opening credits of the series give the impression she's always been into it is just one of the many apparent inconsistencies with the series. These small discrepancies made me feel like I was reading just a fan fic.The affair between Carrie and Estes is also downright bizarre. There's absolutely no emotional connectio... moren between the two throughout the series, and you'd expect him to treat her somewhat differently if their relationship (or lack thereof) led indirectly to the end of his marriage. Finally, it just didn't feel as Homelandish as I had expected. I was hoping for a final knot tying Carrie to that prisoner in Lebanon that told her an American soldier had been turned. In spite of the presence of all characters in the book, it didn't feel like a prequel.
review 2: I have never seen the show but the book was very good. This was a first read book that I won! Carrie is a very intriguing character full of good and bad traits. I found her to be irritating sometimes with the way she runs off and does her own thing though this worked out well for her in the end. She is definitely a thrill seeker and she obviously has some issues in her life just as we all do though hers are somewhat significant. She is a very brave woman and sometimes doesn't think about some of the consequences but she is way smarter than I. I will look for the next book since I am now drawn into her story. If I had cable I would watch the show too. I would like to compare it to what I have read and what I have pictured in my mind. less

Quick read. Captures Carrie's peripatetic and brilliant work as an analyst and her very human side.
