review 1: When I began reading this book I thought "Oh dear, I am never going to get through this book". The language is in something called the First Tongue and there is a glossary at the back to help with pronunciation. I stuck with it, and I'm so glad I did. I won this in a giveaway competition. I really enjoyed this story, which is the first in a series. Nolan, along with his best friend Stanley and his brother Emery go on h summer holiday from Boston to Ireland with Nolan's parents. He is not looking forward to it and thinks it will be boring. How wrong could he be!They meet up with Quinn and Genevieve. Things take a strange turn one night when Quinn's grandmother wanders into the woods nearby. What follows is a huge adventure that takes all the children to their limits. Th... moreere are a lot of characters in this book and I did get confused a few times. But it is well written and moves along well. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
review 2: I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. And I'm glad I did. This was a fantastic start to a series. The book revolves around the adventures of young Nolan and his friends who are sent "across the Veil" to another world one dark and stormy night in Ireland. Their journey begins to protect the Love Verse, one part of the Master Song, from the evil that seeks to control it. It becomes a story of friendship, family, sacrifice, and love. Maloney creates a fantastic set of otherworld characters, not just the good guys, but also the Corrupted (better read as evil henchmen). I think my personal favorite had to be the Thornsword brethren. You can easily pick out other stories that influenced Maloney, but lest any reader should complain, the children make timely references to those specific books or movies. It all adds to the flavor of the story. I enjoyed getting to see Nolan and his friends grow from frightened 12 year olds into less frightened adventurers charged with recovering the other lost verses of the Master Song. Each character has hints dropped about him or her; interesting tidbits that I know will come into play in the rest of the series. This book is a solid read for anyone looking for a good, clean book. It lays a solid foundation without trying to be overtly Christian. The elements are all there and Maloney draws on his own beliefs as needed and weaves them effortlessly in. I immediately passed this book on to my younger sisters and I know it won't be long before they are eagerly awaiting the next installment with me. less
