review 1: A fairly standard book about the Queen, her life and reign built around the no nonsense influence of her parents and the "teetering-on-the-brink-of-revolution" period for the monarchy in the 1990's. An enjoyable read, but the best bit by far is the closing phases of the "Into the Maelstrom" section. Here Andrew Marr perfectly articulates those indispensable characteristics of the monarchy that are so hard to define in the face of unrealistic and idealised republican logic.
review 2: Anglophiles and close observers of the British monarchy, particularly Elizabeth II, will enjoy this detailed and fascinating look at England's current queen in a varierty of contexts from the lives of her grandparents through modern day. It is thoroughly researched and also more tha... moren a tad biased in favor of the queen. On a side note, I enjoyed Marr's writing style and diction - formal English not typically used by American authors (uxorious and self-abnegation, anyone?). less
