review 1: A fairly standard book about the Queen, her life and reign built around the no nonsense influence of her parents and the "teetering-on-the-brink-of-revolution" period for the monarchy in the 1990's. An enjoyable read, but the best bit by far is the closing phases of the "Into the Maelstrom" section. Here Andrew Marr perfectly articulates those indispensable characteristics of the monarchy that are so hard to define in the face of unrealistic and idealised republican logic.
