review 1: I am an unashamed royalist. According to the author, "Though we live in a secular and materialistic age, the Queen believes, quite literally, that she has a vocation - that her function is a religious calling she must answer every day of her life." I have always held the Queen in high esteem due to her dedication, work ethic & stoicism. She has dedicated her whole life to serving her country. On her 21st birthday, she made the following pledge:"I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong." She has kept this pledge unwaveringly. She exemplifies continuity, duty, kindness, and wisdom. She has earned our respect and even our... more awe.
review 2: I'm a firm believer that the best way to learn history is by reading biographies. It's a far more insightful and interesting way to face the past then by memorizing dates and wars. History is all about people, after all. And Queen Elizabeth II holds a unique position in the history of the 20th century. She knew all American presidents from Harry Truman through President Obama. I read this book, however, because of the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. The UK gave birth to the US, in a way. I wanted to know the mother country better. Andrew Marr gives a sympathetic (but, I think, fair) portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, her passions, her challenges and her family. I feel I understand the UK better now, its traditions and its future (a bright one despite some naysayers). If I got to meet the Queen, I would gave her my best curtsy and try very hard not to say anything too inappropriate about her grandson Harry. less

Well-written. Interesting. Gets more into historical associations then most biographies. Not fluff.

I love anything to do with England History so this one was right up there with a book that I like.

A lot of background info on the history of the monarchy--too much for me to take it all in.

Reads way too much like a textbook for my liking - maybe I will get back to it one day.
