review 1: I was tempted to give up reading this awfully dry book but kept going. Then about a third of the way in it takes a turn and does indeed become a very black satire. It becomes quit amusing for the next third and then finishes rather badly. There are far too many characters in the cast, the plot is so twisted that it makes little or no sense. Maybe for insiders, which one assumes Mr. Marr is, it might be a riot from start to finish. Not for me though. The middle third could have made a funny satire, nice and dark, but the rest of the book is a let down.Mr. Marr even manages to give himself and his TV show a couple of mentions, I've never watched and and will not be starting now either.
review 2: I like Andrew Marr & I was excited when I realised he had branched ou
... moret into fiction, so much so that I actually went out to buy a different hardback and came home with this instead. I think fundamentally Andrew's factual writing style does not translate to fiction. A fiction writer must fire the imagination by painting a picture with lively details, not just 'this happened and then that happened'. I was not left feeling like I'd had any special insight into the corridors of power, as I expected. The plot is based around the 2017 EU 'in out' referendum. The Prime Minister dies in office 6 days before the vote and his aides go to great lengths in order to cover this up to save the vote going the wrong way. The plot was mildly interesting, the characters vaguely believable but it didn't grip me and my imagination wasn't fired. It will remain to be seen which of Andrew's predictions come true; the Queen is dead (that's Treason don't you know), Johnson has succeeded Cameron! Nick Robinson is knighted and George Osborne is a Lord. I think Andrew had a bit of fun with these. Back to history now please! less

Absolutely first class & extremely topical given we have just had the vote on Scottish Independence.

I read this book found it very interesting. It was very different but still rather good.

Disappointing and only continued to the end because I expected more from Andrew Marr

Thought this was a good read. Love Rory Bremner being a villain!
