review 1: It was interesting reading a bio on someone who is still alive. And to get a better understanding of current events that went a long with Queen and country. Despite the money, fame, etc I don't think I would ever want to be a royal. To constantly have your life on display. To have to be careful of what you say or do, to have to explain your reasons or reactions, when the best thing for you to do is to be quiet.To read of her strong marriage with Philip and the problems with her son, Charles. The reaction of the break up of Charles and Diana and then her trgaic death She chose to take care of her grandsons and most of the country were upset with that choice. A good read.
review 2: Although this was written to coincide with the TV series the author presented it i... mores not the official book of the series.This book does not give a lot of detail into the personal day-to-day aspect of the queen (what she is like behind closed doors) but instead focuses more on the ceremonial role as monarch.It goes through her reign but at the end of each decade there is an interlude section dealing with a specific issue eg her role in the world, the royal yacht Britannia, cost of monarchy etc. I found these interlude sections more interesting than the history of her family.This is a great book for someone who has a small interest in the queen who would like to find out more. If you already have read a lot about the queen you will not find out much new information but it makes for a few hours interesting read. less
