review 1: Andy Cutbill provides readers with a humorous look into a fictitious motherly cow's life, who wants to enter her unlikely baby chicken into a beautiful baby contest. The other cows in the story make fun of Marjorie's (the mother cow) baby chicken (Daisy), and consistently gossip behind her back. Marjorie decides to continue through the contest, and is ultimately awarded a best in show when Daisy sallowed a big nasty worm. Although this book appears to make an attempt at character development, it fails in doing so because of the lack of a story line. Aside from the constant gossiping and strange contests, Russell Ayto illustrates very creative and complimentary pictures to the text, which may be enough to hold listeners' attention through the duration of the book. If teache... morers read this book to their classrooms, I think an appropriate discussion may begin with asking the students to recall who the main characters were, and then following up with why they think Marjorie decided to enter her baby into the beautiful baby contest even though she did not have a calf.
review 2: Cow learns that there is a beautiful baby contest on the farm "strickly cows only", and of course she wants to enter her little one... who happens to be a chicken. Many children may wonder why in the heck this cow has a chicken for a baby if they are not familiar with the first book, "The Cow Who Laid an Egg". Then again, some kids won't even give it a second thought. I really do not think that it is a stand alone book though. You really need to read the first book before you tackle this one. Cute story though, and touching too, because every mother knows, you love your baby no matter what. less

The drawings made me laugh, especially the one with the cows that were laughing and pointing.

Cute but nearly as fantastic as The Cow That Laid an Egg.

I like this book because it was like a comic book.
