review 1: Horrible. This definitely ranks up there in the top 10 worst books I ever set out to read. After a measly four chapters of 'Royally Lost' I couldn't force myself to go on.Angie Stanton's always had a very simple style to her writing, but despite this, I've still enjoyed a couple of her stories in the past, mainly just due to how cute they are.But this book held none of that 'cuteness' factor at all. I know I didn't read the entire book, but what I did read had me ready to jump off a cliff. And so I opened up good reads to scroll through some reviews, see if anything redeeming may show itself. However my attempts were in vain.Let me just make a list of all the things that pissed me off in this book.1. The Europe hate. Now I don't live in Europe (nor in the States) but earl... moreier this year after much saving and scrounging I got myself over to Europe for a couple of weeks - Budapest and Austria being two of the places I visited. I was absolutely astounded by the beauty of the countries and the vivid and rich history that was embedded into each nation. What I do not appreciate is a main character who spends most of her internal monologue plain BITCHING about her overseas holiday to Europe. By chapter 3 I'd heard it at least 20 times how stupid Europe was and all it's history. Seriously, don't believe me?'Apparently it was a loop around the center of Vienna, but all Becca knew was that the tour guide droned on endlessly about long dead musicians, old buildings, and more history than anyone should ever have to hear. From what Becca could gather, some family named Habsburg seemed to be tied to everything. It's not like she'd ever need to know any of this stuff. She needed fresh air, trees, and grass.'And it gets worse...'"Look at all those dishes," Becca said as they entered a room with floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with dishes... "No one needs that many plates, and why did they save them? Because honestly, who cares about three-hundred-year-old plates?"Which brings me to my next pissed off point...2. The main characterBECCA, somehow shed that bitchy ungrateful skin and gain some redeeming qualities - or failing that go die in a hole. Her voice was not one I wanted to hear for another 100 pages.3. The 'love' story? (Or what I read of it so far anyway)Can I say CREEPY? For godsakes Nikolai turns up twice around Becca in the space of 2 days in 2 different cities, and the word stalker doesn't come to mind? From what I could tell these two can't possibly become a real couple. I mean Nikolai's a European PRINCE and Becca is a Europe HATER. No, no, and no. Not getting any approval from me on this one.4. The parent hating... The Classical music dissing... The whole 'I'm a runaway prince hating on my parents - you hate your parents too? Awesome - perfect foundation for our romance'... I could go on.All I can say is just... if any of the above would annoy you as much as it did me - don't pick up this book. There are so many more out there which are far more worthy of your time.
review 2: 3.5 stars.I wanted to love it. I really, really do. But I could only give it that much stars.I love Europe and its history. I love traveling. I love adventures and getting lost in them. And the fact that this book offers those WITH a prince in it? That's awesome. Nothing could stop me from buying this book. The story is light and fun. It's something you should read if you want to stay away from heavy plot lines for a while. If you want to escape something, this is the perfect book because it's about escaping something as well. By the end of the book, I was smiling. But the characters... More than once I found myself cringing at them or tolerating them. The girl dissing on history and art in Europe many times made me want to slap her with a history book. First of all, she should be grateful that she's on that tour seeing historical places that many people would die to see in person. If she didn't want to be on that tour with her parents so bad, she should've just pretended she was alone as she toured around. Is it that difficult? Is it that important to condemn her father and stepmom that she couldn't even begin to appreciate how beautiful her surroundings were? I couldn't see how a nature lover such as herself couldn't see and appreciate the beauty around her. It was sad. Now, the boy. Not much to say about the boy. He's basically almost perfect. The thing I just can't comprehend was how easily he fell for the girl. Sure, the girl fell just as easily for him. But he's supposed to be somebody who've seen and met all kinds of people. I don't see how she's attractive enough for him to follow her country after country. Thinking about it, I don't think I recall any depth in her character much. While his act was justified, hers wasn't. He is noble. Well, duh. He's a prince. But really, he is. He saw the importance of history just as it is important to move on with the times. I liked how he solved their financial dilemma in the end, though I predicted almost every solution. The thing that keeps bothering me though is how he wasn't able to defend himself or the girl from the mugger but he was confident that he could take on the palace's head of security. I mean, didn't he take any defense classes or something? If he's confident like that, he might've. So why couldn't even he fight the mugger? The thing that bugged me the most though, is how quickly they said their 'I love you's. It was three or four days? I was like, Whuuuuuuuut? How'd that happened? You just met! You haven't even shared any connection yet! Just flirts and sharing of stories that weren't enough for you to say those sacred words. And they met like, only a couple of hours a day! I'd understand if they spent every waking hour in those days, but they didn't. The author didn't justify their words with enough actions. It lacked connection at the time they said it. If they said those words when they met again after a couple of months, I'd understand it. I'd get it. They're justified by that time. I feel like it was odd and wasn't the right timing for itTo be honest, I feel like at some point I wondered if this was something from a daydream of the author. But despite all that, I liked it. I especially liked the moments they see each other and sneak off to somewhere at the beginning and near the end part when they got separated to go back to their realities. I think they connected more when they weren't together anymore, how ironic. But there you go. Their longing for each other is what made their feelings real. So I got no complains there.Like I said, I finished the book with a smile. It's worth reading if you want something light and adventurous. By the end of the book, I felt like I watched a movie. :) less
