review 1: The Forever Marriage by Ann Bauer. The story of a woman who wishes her husband dead - only to realize after he does pass away that maybe their love was stronger than she had realized. This is a story of the widows reflections of her life as the reader comes to realize how she came to be the person she is. I have not read many authors that write as true to life as Bauer does! She addresses some topics that most won't even touch and she does so with such brilliant honesty. I recommend this one!
review 2: Although The Forever Marriage begins on a less than appealing note, one is hooked by Ann Bauer's expert ability to weave together this story of complexities in mesmerizing fashion. Mixing flashbacks and current events, Ms. Bauer drew me in to her somewhat agonizi
... moreng story filled with imperfect characters and obstacles faced in a variety of ways. Without spoilers or listing all overwhelming sad events, I will say the writing is brilliant and scenes so real, navigating through miserable moments becomes easier with each well-written line.Unless you are perfect, you can relate to almost every character in this story. Carmen seems to have it all in her nice suburban home with smart family members -- even a child who rides the short bus, but she is forever stuck in living a life she never wanted. Carmen’s flaws made me love her more, but it is Jobe's (her dying husband) sensibility that kept this novel grounded while Carmen’s imbedded desires and regrets continued to surface. The Forever Marriage makes readers ponder their own lives, and perhaps realize they ARE experiencing a wonderful life despite occasional hiccups or pangs of feeling trapped. TFM reiterates the saying “Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” But this story is so much more than just the above line, and Ms. Bauer’s intoxicating writing style will grab your heart and refuse to let you detach. If you feel the ending is a bit disappointing, embrace the luminous writing throughout for it is the author’s prerogative to conclude her tale as she pleases. Kudos to Ms. Bauer for not taking the easy route with her ending. A terrific read that will linger with you long after you put it down and head to the store to replenish your Kleenex supply. less
