review 1: What a poignant memoir. Several times I felt the tears start, and I am not an emotional reader whatsoever. I'm not a Mom, and I don't even have a natural affinity for children. Why does this matter? Of course it doesn't, except that Hood's narrative is so moving, in under two hundred pages even I became attached to Grace and felt her loss. Hood articulates both her vast love and profound pain so very clearly without ever becoming maudlin or bogging down in the gut-wrenching details--no small feat. She made me feel like I knew and loved Grace, too, and I shared in her loss . . . even at a distance, having never met Grace, having only known her through her mother's tribute. A great writer can inspire even the most apathetic reader.
review 2: Oh this book made m
... moree sad but happy! There was joy and hope! I cant imagine this ordeal of dealing with unexpected death of child. That chapter was hard to read. Well Helli the first was hard to read. No matter who we lose in death and grieve for people--well meaning pellet say things they think to get us through the grief. Doesn't always work as easily as the words as this book reveals. Grief is ongoing and personal! less
