review 1: An unusual take on a near-future post-apocalyptic/refugee scenario, set in a global Ice Age. The choice of a global freeze is curious given recent trends to the contrary; unfortunately, the author takes it as a given, making no effort to explain how it came to pass (nuclear winter, asteroid impact, or mega-volcanic eruption are three plausible scenarios I can imagine which could have been adapted here). Her conjectured subtropical Pacific island refuge, despoiled by poorly-thought-out and unscalable technologies and overpopulation, is very believable, though--as is the protagonist as a product of this environment. I was frustrated by the author's wild swings between highly realistic and believable expository writing on the social / characterization side vs. fantastical and... more hallucinatory interior mindscapes (without giving away spoilers, I especially questioned the author's use of inner mindscape near the end of the book). Overall, I found it an interesting but uneven effort by an emerging author.
review 2: This was a fantastic book! Much better than I expected it. There are some definitely dark mature elements and (don't read if you are triggered my non-consensual/dubious consent) It's gritty, interesting, and engaging, the plot is good but a little under-developed, the characters are great and the world is engaging! I would recommend this to a more adult reader, but it's a great read! I'm so glad to see a transgender character in a story, especially with his whole persona not focused on his gender/transition! It was a great relief for me and so well done!!! less

I love post-apocalyptic, dystopian lit. Has a YA feel to it. Pretty good; not great.
