review 1: This collection of essays is meant to deal with the funnier side of approaching 50 (like 49). I can add that it's even more challenging on the other side. Although several of the essays acknowledged the problems identified as being first world problems, this is basically a bunch of fluff. I did develop some empathy since the author is an actress (if you've seen the host and hostess of Dinner and a Movie--well, she's the author of this book) who struggles in a really status conscious world of Hollywood performers. Interestingly some of the later essays such as dealing with her aging parents did hit a note of seriousness (while still dealing with the topic humorously). For the most part though it was hard for me to get into some of the first world problems that really d... moreon't add up to much.
review 2: This book was OK. It was good, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I had thought it was going to be a humorous look at being on the edge of 50. It started out that way and it ended in the same light, but the entire middle of the book was more of an autobiographical exploration. I especially, although moving, wasn't particularly happy with the long section about Ms. Gurwitch's friend's struggle and eventual death from pancreatic cancer. Although it was handled thoughtfully, I didn't feel it had a place in this book. Also, I guess people in the entertainment industry are different from us "regular" folks. As much as Ms. Gurwitch tried to make herself be a "regular" person, her complaints about money, etc., didn't really resonate with me when she was spending money she supposedly didn't have on Botox, yoga classes with a very expensive teacher, cosmetics and other frivolous expenses. Again, this book was OK, but I feel that there are better "coming-of-middle-age" books out there. less

The author does a good job of using humor to deal with some of the challenges of midlife.

Some chapters are funnier than others but the one on meditation was spot-on hilarious.
