review 1: We recently saw this painting in person for the first time and we were mesmerized by its beauty. Nothing compares to seeing it in person; It is an amazing painting and no print or reproduction can capture the radiance. We were at The Neue Gallerie to see the Degenerate Art exhibit so I was eager to read up on the painting and it's story. The author has done extensive research and the book is well written. I was charmed by the painting and it's story.
review 2: Good work of history that highlights a lot of the head-in-sand mentality regarding restitution to families devastated by the Nazi regime and the Holocaust. It can be dressed up in different words but bottom line there was a lot of theft and a lot of murder, plain and simple. A lot of lying to cover up t
... morehat fact. And even though the heirs ultimately sold the restituted Klimts, that was their decision. Luckily for the public, the gold Adele Bloch-Bauer portrait can be seen. The others, though, were bought by private collectors with deeper pockets. Even sadder is the fate of many other Klimt paintings, recounted in the book by O'Connor. The style of the book is a bit odd, though, gossipy but dry. It does have a lot of ground to cover and a very large cast of characters, which doesn't help.I was disappointed to find that the book does not have any color pictures. All pictures are printed in line in the text. The only color picture is the cover reproduction of the stunning gold Adele Bloch-Bauer portrait of the title. less

Agree that it is hard to follow all of the people involved in the book, but still an enjoyable read.

Such an interesting way to learn a bit of art (and world) history, and extremely well written.
