review 1: Anne Mateer has written a completely enjoyable book. I loved it, couldn't put it down, well, except for one night to sleep. I loved how she wrote the characters where she kept pulling and tugging on each one of their hearts for them to do the right thing, the right thing in God's eyes. So many of the characters, not just the two main ones, ended up being taught lessons they had no idea they were even learning. From the beginning to the end the twists and turns and lots of surprises are interspersed throughout. You never know what to expect, you can't see around the corners. It was hard not to love all the characters, but a lot of the children living in the orphanage especially. Some so quiet, shy and living more within themselves, and others loud, boisterous and making a lot... more of trouble. Sadie and Blaine and his brother met in the orpahnage when they were young children. You will laugh and cry with them as their story is told. When I read a book I want the writer to describe in lots of detail the characters and the settings of the story. I believe that Anne Mateer totally did this in the book.I would recommend this book to all who love historical fiction.
review 2: I am so torn on this book. I think I would give it a 3.5. I enjoyed reading it but it was so frustrating that the main character was soooo naive. Almost to the point of missing things that were RIGHT in front of her face. She was extremely immature and I kept thinking she was going to get better as the book progressed - but right up to the last chapter she was accusing people without proper knowledge.. UGH! I mean.. I know she was young and was taking on too much responsibility, but still - I kept waiting... It was a nice story to read and I am not saying I did NOT like it. Just saying.. it was a bit frustrating. It was well written and a nice story about an orphanage and how it all works. It ended well and I think it might be a good story for a young person. Maybe I am just too old and cynical..lol.. less
