review 1: It's Anne Tyler, so it's readable. But only barely. Noah's Compass refers to the fact that Noah didn't need a compass, he just needed to be able to float. The main character, Liam, is a kind of Noah, in that he's never been fully present in his life. He's only ever drifted at its edges. A burglar knocks him on the head and he loses his memory of the attack, and goes in search of a "rememberer" and falls in a virginal romance with her. After some very low key drama, he goes back to drifting again.This book could have done with a compass. It's all very well to write about ordinary people, but it makes for hard reading. What's the point? It's not as if it had no potential - it did. Eunice was a would-be interesting character and so was Liam's daughter, Kitty. But the story di... mored nothing more than scratch the surface of Liam's relationship with them. I was waiting for something to come out of it, right until the last page, and nothing happened other than Liam deciding he was alright with being a drifter in his own life. It wasn't what I wanted to happen, since it was just a matter of choice that made it so, and it wasn't even a choice Liam himself was easy with. 2 stars.
review 2: Not her best, and probably not even her average, but Noah's Compass still has Tyler's colorful, three-dimensional characters, even though her plot is sort of like taking an ambling Sunday walk through the park. Hmm. Without a compass, maybe? So maybe the dribbling little story line that strings a bunch of really great people together was done on Purpose? That might be assigning too much credit to Tyler, but since I love her work as a whole, I'm fine giving her that. less
