Flower Shop Mystery
review 1: Who could have imagined there was that much drama associated with a flower store! Perhaps the details of the mortuary accounts may be considered TMI; not sure. I hate to think all those beautiful flowers, artful arrangements, and coordinated colors are accompanied by the kind of cut-throat competition described in this book. The author seems to know her flowers, however, and certainly the business of a floral shop. Quincy McKay is a recently divorced owner of the shop her Aunt Rosie left her prior to her leaving on extended world travels. Quincy is the daughter of a staunch Mormon mother of Utah. Her married experience was that of a battered woman and is apparently the same currently being encountered by that of her sister, Allie, which is resolved during the climax. When ... moreone of Quincy's strongest floral competitors turns up dead in one of her former customer's mortuary's, all circumstantial evidence seems to point to Quincy. Fortunately, the detective that was going to call on her doesn't show, and the one who does following the hit and run of her delivery van turns out to be 6'4" (to her 5'9") and gorgeous (and, huh um! single). Oh thank heaven! Safe to say we are now embroiled in the male/female mating tango while Quincy uses her extensive Mormon family network to try and solve the murder of Derrick, the dastardly. Alex Cooper (yes, Alex) ebbs and flows in and out of the plot sufficient to keep the hormones riding rampant. While I couldn't identify with either of these two characters, I enjoyed Danny, the flamboyant associate of the floral business network. The intricate explanation of who did what to whom gets bogged down and lost towards the climax when too many clarifications only serve to sour the flower water. The die-hard romance fans would probably enjoy, but the sibling battering sub-plot only served to conflict with the romance of the main characters.
review 2: (E) I got the 2nd book in this series free from Amazon.com, so I bought this one to read first. (Not surprisingly, I like to read books in order.) This was just okay. I like that it's in Utah, but the Mormon angle is kind of odd. I hate how Quincy is so unreceptive to accepting help from a man because of her bad marriage. [eyeroll] I had a hard time following who was related to whom, which made me skim through parts of this. less
