A Russell Quant Mystery
review 1: A better than good, fun read! I've really enjoyed following Russell's adventures throughout this excellent series,of course liking some of the books more than others, but this book was sure a bit different, in a kind of a nice way, than the earlier ones. The whole complex and really quite unbelievable scheme to bring the murderer to justice sounded like something put together by Spenser or Jack Reacher rather than by Russell Quant and, with it depending on the amateur acting abilities of his friends from previous books, particularly mother Kay, was destined from it's beginning to fail if it wasn't for JP. JP is an absolutely fabulous addition to this otherwise great cast and I'm anxiously looking forward to, I hope, many more great escapades in this series. Kay Quant is s... moretill one of the greatest characters invented in any mystery series ranking right up there with Louise Penny's Ruth Zardo, Ted Wood's Sam and Hilary MacLeod's Jasmine. I've noticed some reviewers, although they've rated this book 4 stars or more, saying that it's the first they've read in the series and they were able to understand and accept the actions of the recurring characters. I guess one could, to some extent, but I really don't think anyone could get the whole significance of, for instance, Sereena's contribution to the plan if they hadn't read about all of Sereena's previous escapades. I still feel it is necessary to read a mystery series, with recurring characters, in order to experience all the character development and the full background of their contribution to the storyline of a later book. Please, Anthony, bring on the first book of the Quant-Taine series very quickly!
review 2: A mysterious voicemail telephone message ends Russell's self-imposed hiatus from detective work and he is soon on the trail of a serial killer for hire. There's a suspenseful conclusion in Mexico, although it is bland ending. I'd rate the story overall as a so-so.It will help if you have read others in the series in order to know where the various characters fit into Russell's life. The best thing is Russell's new boyfriend, JP, who is a budding detective. I think this addition to the cast may refresh the series. This is worth reading and I'm looking forward to the next book. less
