review 2: A 12 year old boy who at
... moretimes seems like a weird mixture between Lisbeth Salander (with a photographic memory) and Harry Potter (with loyal and unquestioning sidekicks Ron and Hermione) is helping a disgruntled but well-intentioned cop find a serial killer. All the ingredients to a great story are there, yet at the end the best I can come up with is, "It's pretty good… for a Mexican book." I like the fact that books like these are published in my country, that other genres and age groups are being considered. The story has a very local context: from the chauffeur at the mercy/disposal of a rich child and a little girl who wants nothing more than to dance and have a boyfriend, to some elements of mexican culture that frankly seemed a bit too forced (like the thought that two boys will have posters of Ana Guevara on their bedrooms… Niurka or Chicharito I'd buy). The suspense was good, as was the social criticism in regards to inequalities and insecurity. But even though the story followed detective-story formulas successfully, I wanted more character development, less fade outs in the action scenes, and believable child-adult interactions. It was still an engaging story with a good villain and with a good balance of unanswered questions/ satisfying answers, so I might still read the next book and see where the series goes. less
