review 1: This is a VERY scary book. My heart skipped a few beats a few times, but I couldn't put it down. I don't think my mom thought it would be so scary when she checked it out for me at the library. And the back cover is right. Do NOT read after dark. It almost gave me nightmares when I read it last night, and I stayed up last night tossing and turning, and jumping at every creak in the house. But I really liked and can't wait to read the next one.
review 2: This is an easy-to-read (11/12+) series offering some fairly frightening horror and lashings of the supernatural. Yes, it doesn't feel entirely fresh -- there's good bit of The Dark is Rising (seventh sons of seventh sons, who are needed to battle rising dark forces) mixed in with the Lancashire landscape and... more myth-world of The Weirdstone of Brisingamen -- but it's probably easier to grasp "and get into" than either of those classic novels. The main character is Thomas Ward, a likable enough young fellow who has been apprenticed to the Spook nearing retirement age. His job: to keep the boggarts, ghosts and witches under control. In this novel, the first in the series, Thomas is tricked by one witch into letting an even more notorious and powerful witch escape. Brave and foolish in equal parts, Thomas unleashes all sorts of trouble upon the County and his own family -- and he will need a bit of help (from friends, foes and his mother) to get it all cleaned up. less
