review 1: A compelling and nuanced history/portrait of Israel from the beginnings of zionism to the present day. The chapters proceed chronologically and are largely told through interviews/portraits of key individuals, ranging from some of the original settlers to the scientists behind the nuclear program to gay nightclubbers today. Ari Shavit is a columnist for Haaretz, a Peace Now member, but also has a deep and almost pained feel for what he portrays as the complexities of Israel's history and current position.
