review 1: Shavit pulls together a fascinating "crazy quilt" that simultaneously makes me want to visit Israel and feel hopeless that Israel will ever achieve peace. His language's rhythm is lovely and repeatedly accentuates the complex context affecting Israel (e.g., "We thrive between calamities. That’s why we are so quick and vital and creative. That’s why we are so neurotic and loud and unbearable."). We want simple solutions to the problems we face. Shavit makes it clear that such hopes are unrealistic.
review 2: If you are able to think about the Israeli Arab conflict then read this bookIf you are biased you will only be less objective .This book gives A view and some factsHe is not objective but sincere and full of towards Israel.Israel is far from perfect and
... moreShavit wants to show it. Nevertheless if you read his book without prejudice you will also love Israel, support Zionism but with a strong knowledge of some mistakes made by Israeli leaders. On the other hand, even if you support a Palestinian state, you will see that Israelis are no evil and Palestinian far from angels. Most Arabs leaders made huge mistakes and are responsible for the lack of solutions in the Middle East. Before reading the book, keep in my that a citizen like Shavit is more harsh than any outsiders as he lives over there. less
