review 1: This was definitely a fun read; I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. I initially purchased the book because the author is also a fan of Diana Gabaldon's novels, so I figured it would be diverting, if nothing else. The setting is Scotland in the 1500s, and although there isn't a great deal of historical detail, the facts that are included seem to be accurate (given what I know about that time period). The characters are intriguing: Davina, a noblewoman, becomes infatuated with a Gypsy fortune teller when she's a young girl, only to be married to a more suitable match several years later. Unfortunately, her husband is abusive and cruel, and despite her family's support, she cannot seem to escape him. Eventually, the gypsies come back to town and the handsome fortune teller ... morere-enters the picture; but Broderick is not what he seems, since he's really a vampire. There's plenty of sexual tension between them (which does come to fruition!). I also liked some of the more minor characters, especially the other members of the gypsy caravan and Davina's handmaid, Rosselyn. Although at times the story felt a bit predictable, it was an engaging read, and the ending definitely left me wanting to read the next book in the series. There are some editing issues, in that I saw a few mistakes here and there, but overall it wasn't distracting from the story.
review 2: Ok, it's official! I so love this Bonded By Blood series. This series will be one that I will read numerous times. Midnight Conquest has everything a person wants, good and bad. The heroine, Davina has to overcome major issues in her adult life including domestic abuse. Her character through these issues in her life makes her a much stronger person. Broderick is a strong character from the beginning and yet has his own issues to overcome and deal with. As their romance grows throughout the book, the reader feels that their love will span a lifetime and more. Davina and Broderick states it best, "...eternally yours...for all eternity." less
