review 1: I very much enjoyed the beginning of this book as it described the unusual love story between the protagonist and his love interest. While I was reading, I couldn't quite commit to their love story though I enjoyed it. Something felt off and I had a premonition that something would happen that I didn't like. So when it happened, I felt vindicated... and then the story continued. This was an unusual story that was told, and due to that fact, it kept me engaged and I wanted to finish the book. There were parts of the book I didn't enjoy but I think that was intended. Overall a good book.
review 2: This book was surprisingly compelling. The author's voice is engaging, humble, and realistic. I liked the characters, especially Mike, as he tries to run his tattoo sho... morep and mentors Lamar. Deb is a sassy, charismatic characters and I was pulling for Mike and Deb's relationship. The writing is tightest and most interesting when the story centers on the "family" in the tattoo shop and the "special" tattoos that Mike does including the ashes of deceased loved ones on their surviving relatives. Unfortunately for me, the second half of the book was trying just a little too hard to shock. From the movie "Happiness" about pedophiles to the inner thoughts of the serial killer to the final comeuppance for the killer, the author seems to be trying to overwhelm the readers with graphic violence or be"edgy". For me, it was too much and cheapened the book, distancing me emotionally from the story.The book is still stylish, engaging, and unusual. I'll definitely check out his other book. Plus, he's a Michigan author. less
