review 1: At first I was really not into it, but I think that was because I was expecting a heartfelt tribute to a mother and I was ready to connect with that. The more I read, though, the more it just brought out so many different feelings in me, some of horror and disgust, and some of understanding, empathy, and appreciation. I loved this story and how raw it was in it's acknowledgment of what some mother daughter relationships are like, and what many families are like. I appreciated this personal story a lot and think it speaks highly to the long lasting effects of childhood, resiliency, and what it means to have a mother that doesn't fit the expected role. It was refreshing actually.
review 2: This is a fantastic, gorgeous memoir about dying, caregiving, motherhood, ... morelove, abuse, queerness, and the unending complexities of the families we're given and the families we make. I'm impressed by Ariel's ability to write about this with such clarity so shortly after her mother's death--I feel confident that there are more stories and more truths here, which is what makes me look forward to Ariel's next memoir. If you're not yet familiar with her writing, stop making excuses and start reading. less
