review 1: I'm thorn. on one hand, knowing a bit more about Muslim culture and reading about how religion ifluenced Hayat was enlightening and interesting. On the other hand, I kept thinking everyone was so unbelievably self-centered... from his parents, with their own dramas and pulling them on him, to the relatives, to Hayat, the spoiled ignorant brat... it just maddened me even though I rationally understood he was just a boy trying to figure it all out amidst so much. The writing could use some editing to explain the million terms (at some point I just gave up and guessed), and the author's narrative is good. Not amazing, imo, but good enough to do the job.
review 2: Enjoyed reading it, explains the complexities of clashing cultural and emotional values. How our morals
... more are cultivated and our religious beliefs are deeply rooted in us and based on those we make our choices in our lives. I was able to understand the conflicts of beliefs, complexities of cultural values, and sticking to somehow wrong decisions to one make in his life somehow. When you decide to carry on with whatever comes in your way and bear the pain without complaining. I think being from Pakistan and living here was defintely a plus to understand the context. less

A compelling plot, the sort of book that was increasing hard to put down as it unfolded.

Very Sufi. Painful and heartbreaking, like life, but at the end, inexplicably uplifing.
