The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

**SPOILER ALERT!!!**

I can’t believe I’ve never reviewed this book, especially since it’s one of my favourites.  I started reading it when I was either 12 or 13 and immediately loved the series, especially since I’ve loved Greek Mythology since I was introduced to it when I was 11.  I flew through the series in a few weeks throughout summer break and it’s been one of my favourite series ever since.  I’m rereading it because 1) I’m taking a Greek Myth class and 2) I want to try starting The Heroes of Olympus series.

This book is amazing.  It starts off with Percy Jackson not knowing that he’s the son of Poseidon, and he basically thinks he’s just a troubled kid.  He’s attacked by a Fury masquerading as his math teacher, getting him expelled from school and so his mother, who is married to a piece of shit, takes him on vacation.  He then gets attacked by a minotaur, who steals his mother and forces him to enter Camp Halfblood.

There, he learns how to be a demigod and discovers who his father is, among a lot of training and meeting Annabeth, the daughter of Athena.  Percy is then accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt and so he goes on a quest with Annabeth and the satyr, Grover, in order to find it and bring it back.

I liked the way the author wrote out the quest.  It was basically the three of them being attacked by a monster or getting themselves into some situation and then having to find their way out of it.  I also liked the narration, as Rick Riordan makes it believable that Percy is actually a 12 year old.  I also did not expect the plot twist (the first time I read it) because Luke seemed so nice!

What I didn’t like was the format I “read” this book.  I decided to for an audiobook this time since I got headphones for Christmas and they had a copy at the library.  It was a mistake…the guy narrating read so slowly and made really annoying voices for Annabeth, Luke, and Ares.  It would’ve been more worth it to just read the book.

5/5 stars!

For my reading challenge:

4. A book with a weather element in the title
