review 1: A beautiful, beautiful collection of short stories. I like the connections between all of them. I liked Delia's stories best, probably because of the queer factor and that they weren't as heartbreaking as some of the others. Some were almost too sad. but I really liked the characters and the language. I felt very invested in their lives, which is cool for short stories. Johnson really gets into the internal workings of her characters. I felt the insecurities of the young characters, navigating their uncertainties and inexperience keenly. The grief and the alcoholism were a little disconcerting because it felt so real. The way these characters narrate is disorienting. I'd definitely read whatever she writes next.
review 2: More of This Word or Maybe Another is a
... more collection of coming of age tales that pulls you back toward the uncomfortable parts of one's own youth and keeps you there wanting more, rooting for characters like Pudge in "Titty Baby" and "What Was Left." Her south Louisiana settings and characters are genuine and well rendered, and the New Orleans stories take you into the back streets of the neighborhoods, the real city, the world of the people waiting for a bus on Canal Street which the tourists pass in a hurry for brochure New Orleans. The last story, "St. Luis of Palmyra" leave you hanging and wanting to move onto the promised novel of the same name. Highly recommended. less

Excellent stories, loved the writing. The first 50 pages were slow, but after that I was hooked.

Right there with Ron Rash, Eudora Welty, Denis Johnson, and Larry Brown. So damn good.
