review 1: A thrilling novel about intrigue during the reign of King Henry VIII. A great read for lovers of historical romance. Barbara Kyle has clearly researched the period thoroughly and brings out the religious issues between the Catholics and the Protestants very clearly. She completely changed my opinion of Thomas Moore who I had always liked from seeing the play 'A Man for all Seasons' but who is shown to be rather less virtuous in this book and probably closer to his real historical character. This is the first in a series about the Thornleigh family and I am endeavouring to read them all.
review 2: So...I wanted to like this book and had every intention of liking it. It is about my favorite period in time and there is a whole series...but needless to day I won't
... morebe reading the rest of them. This book suffered because I had just finished two books about the time period, both of which were exceedingly better written. Full disclosure also....I listened to the book instead of reading it. Normally I would not "penalize" a book by the quality of the audio version, but as the writer herself did the audio version, I'm feeling free. The story itself. Well, the storyline was ok. And I do like a strong main character. But I didn't "feel" for her in anyway. I didn't love her, hate her, empathize with her....nothing. This was true about the rest of the characters as well. None of them caught my interest. I didn't care about the outcome of their lives or what happened to them. What helped me finish the book was the "educational value". It did provide a lot of information about the different religious revolutions going on during the time. The audio version. Kyle has a very wispy voice and that was consistently "urgent" in tone, even in portions where the urgency or anxiousness wasn't implied in the writing.Sad I didn't like it because I was ready for a new series. less

Adventure galore, if you can forgive some great stretches in the plotting. Spicy romance.
