review 1: Barbara O'Neal's The Secret of Everything was a good story. But I found it hard to get interested until almost midway through the book. Tessa Harlow leads hiking tours for adventurous vacationers. An accident and injury during a trip forces her to take a break from hiking. Tessa decides to return to Los Ladrones, New Mexico, a place form her early childhood. This visit brings back pieces of her memory. She meets hospitable people, and some of them seem familiar. In most of the early parts of the book, we get to know Tessa somewhat. She is fighting with memories of her past that she can't quite understand. After about the mid point of the book, I finally became engaged with Tessa and the people of Los Ladrones, and then the story took on a life that kept me reading. At time... mores the story is deep. It touches on the hippy culture of the 60s, family, secrets, and fantasy Tessa becomes real. The reading starts as a challenge and then becomes a reward.
review 2: I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is the first book I read by this author and I had no idea what to expect. This was at its core a story about coming home. And not just for the main character. The author spends the book showing us that you have to come home to learn the truth about yourself and that when you are home, miracles occur. Perhaps not plausible, but one can dream.I liked the way the recipes were woven into the story and the way the author used food and dogs to express emotions, spirituality, love and the magic of life.It was a little sappy. But I have to admit that I was happy that Tessa seemed to fall as much in love with Vince's oldest daughter as she did with Vince himself. The narration was great. I recommend the book. I highly enjoyed it and will read other books by this author. less
