review 1: Fast and easy read. Some repeated information if you've read Ehrman's other books, but that's understandable. Myself, I read it more out of interest for "okay let's see what the more respectable Jesus-Mythicist arguments are" as I'd run into a crazed mythicist type before who clearly thought that not realizing Jesus didn't exist was incredibly stupid and it was obvious he didn't exist at all. I was kind of disappointed with their arguments - unless Ehrman is misrepresenting them, which I doubt.Anyway, Ehrman does a solid job of bringing up both the positive case for why Jesus exists, and then examining various mythicist arguments and showing why they're usually either irrelevant or weak. In the process, he ends up bringing up a lot about what historians know and think ... moreof the "historical Jesus", which is interesting as well (although somewhat covered by some of Ehrman's other books). One interesting bit was that the prediction by Jesus that the temple would be destroyed, Ehrman indicates is actually likely to be historical and not merely added in after the Temple was destroyed in AD 70; actually prophets of the era predicted that the Temple was going to be destroyed all the time, and for someone opposed to the Sadducees, as Jesus was, predicting the destruction of the temple was basically predicting the end of the collaborationist Sadducees and their downfall, which considering it was the Sadducees who apparently arranged for Jesus's execution, seems pretty plausible.Anyway, lightly recommended; if you're genuinely undecided, Ehrman gives a good explanation for why the overwhelming scholarly consensus is that Jesus existed, and if you're like me, the examination and then criticism of the more "respectable" mythicist arguments is interesting enough.
review 2: It isn't a spoiler for me to tell you that the self-professed agnostic author's answer to the question is yes; Ehrman makes that statement up front. What's amazing is how clearly he explains why and how scholarly consensus came to and supports that judgment. Point by point, he refutes the arguments of the "mythicists," those who contend that there was never a historical figure, Jesus of Nazareth, who was the basis for Christianity. This book is more-or-less an extended prologue for Erhman's upcoming release HOW JESUS BECAME GOD. I can hardly wait to dig into it! less
